Recruiting 101 – Division II Academic Eligibility Requirements

In our last blog post we talked about Division I academic eligibility requirements. If you want to practice and compete in athletics when you arrive at school you must be academically eligible when you arrive just like in Division I. In order to receive scholarship money you will need to make sure that you do the and have the following completed. You must:

  • Complete high school
  • Complete 16 core courses set by the NCAA
    1. English – 3 years
    2. Math – 2 years and must be Algebra 1 or higher
    3. Natural or physical science – 2 years and must include 1 year of lab if offered by your high school
    4. English, math, or natural or physical science must include 3 years
    5. Social science – 2 years
    6. You must also complete 4 years of extra core courses to include foreign language, or comparative religion or philosophy
  • Earn a minimum of 2.0 grade-point-average in your core courses and
  • Earn a combined SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68.

Just like Division I the student athletes are considered to be qualifiers, partial qualifiers, and nonqualifiers. When you are a qualifier you are able to practice and compete for your college in your first year of college. You are also eligible to receive an athletic scholarship during your first year and play four seasons in your sport if you maintain your academic eligibility from year-to-year.

You are considered a Division II partial qualifier when you do not meet the eligibility requirements listed above as long as you have graduated from high school. You must have met one of the following:

  • Combined SAT score of 820 or ACT sum of 68
  • Completed the 16 core courses with a minimum of 2.0 GPA

This will allow you to practice with the team at your home facility during your first year. You are also eligible to receive your scholarship in your first year but not eligible to compete in your first year and can play 4 seasons as long as you maintain your academic eligibility year-to-year.

Division II nonqualifiers are athletes who do not meet qualifier and nonqualifier requirements. These student athletes can not practice or compete in their first year, can’t receive athletic scholarships but can receive need-based aid, and can play four years in their sport if they maintain academic eligibility from year-to-year.
